Due to shortage of energy resources, the "smart grid" technology has been promoted rapidly as a solution to solve issues of energy depletion, limited natural resources and global warming. These "smart grids" aim to provide electricity to end-users and with a bidirectional digital communication link will control end-users' devices to distribute the loads in time in order to avoid peaks and to save power in a much more easy and simple way. That is, end-users will be able to allow the smart grid to remotely control all selected devices in their home conveniently and easily in accordance with tracks of all electricity flowing in monitoring systems.

  This year, the European Union has launched the Energy using Products Directive (EuP), whose main objective is an increase in the energy efficiency over the lifetime of a product. This directive is aimed at all household and office appliances, from electric toothbrush, coffee machine and radio, and home entertainment, to PCs, printers, telephones and modems, etc. All these products are normally on stand-by, sometimes even during vacations. The power required for this standby function exceeds that required for urban and long distance travel by roughly 30 percent in most industrialized countries. Unchecked, this development would require in Europe a total energy level as used by Denmark. The private will to save energy is in conflict with traditional behavior, therefore the EuP Directive is aimed at the introduction of new and more energy efficient power supplies, which will reduce power consumption of stand-by modes to 25 percent of current levels by 2020, not by 25 percent.

  BLUEdev is developing an end-to-end system in order to enable the “smart grid” technology by adding an Artificial Intelligence node between the managed property and the grid, so that they can negotiate on the most beneficial operation for both parties. The latter is built upon Right Rule, a fuzzy logic inference engine that fully supports quantitative and qualitative values and a wide variety of Universe of Discourse variables, with very flexible yet effective rules evaluation mechanism.
